City Escape - Copenhagen Edition

October 28, 2017

We've toyed with the idea of visiting Copenhagen ever since my sister came back and couldn't stop raving about it. Let me just tell you, she's one of those people that the hashtag #unimpressed was created for, so I thought this place must be out of this world. I'll be honest, I mostly wanted to go for the bikes and the cute outfits I'd be wearing. -_-

How to get around. Bikes, bikes bikes! If there's one thing to do when you arrive, that's to ask your hotel if it rents bikes and to book some for the time your're there. They're in high demand and it's seriously the best way to get around town. It took us a bit of getting used to (everyone is so fast...compared to me anyway), but soon we were hooked on biking everywhere.

City Passes are also very useful to have on hand. You can purchase them online here and receive them as a text message on your phone. They're valid on all forms of public transportation in zones 1 to 4 (which is pretty much where you'll be during your trip) including water busses, trains and metro. Most importantly, the public transportation in Copenhagen is bike friendly which means you can take your bike with you on that water bus and save yourself some pedalling (unless your into it in which case never mind).

Where to eat. We enjoyed evenings at Paper Island but I hear it's soon closing (December 22nd 2017) as the area is getting redeveloped. Named after the paper storage it used to host, it is now home to food stalls, trucks and bars...as well as the occasional street party. I'm actually happy I got to experience it before it's gone because the concept is pretty awesome and nothing like I've seen.

I'm also highly recommending brunch at the Union Kitchen. First for the vibe, second for the amazing tasting food - all the ingredients are carefully chosen and locally sourced. I was pretty impressed with their timing too. I had made a reservation for 11 am and at 11 am on the dot we were sitting at a table getting our orders taken. If only life in Canada worked like that...Loud sigh!

Where to stay. There were four of us (two couples) and we wanted a larger space where we could eat breakfast and dinner together, have boozy wine conversations about our city adventures and chill after a long day of exploring. We ended up choosing Stay Seaport and I'm so glad we did. The location is pretty spectacular (if you're into views and stuff like that) and you get tons of space compared to downtown hotels. For more deets of the place check out my review hiaaah.

What to see. Most of the best things we've seen in Copenhagen we stumbled upon accidentally while biking or walking around. One day we spent a couple of hours laying on the grass in the beautiful park at The Rosenborg Castle, then biked through the square of the Amalienborg royal residence and chilled in the amazing gardens of the Royal Library

If you're visit includes any rainy days, head for the Carlsberg Brewery for some merry day drinking, good food and a lively atmosphere. I especially enjoyed the smoked salmon salad which was so big I had to enlist help from my husband and friends to finish.

Architecture buffs will love to take a spin around the Opera House and the Black Diamond library. Make sure to ride the water bus there for a picturesque view of the structures and take some time aside to spend on the lounge chairs by the water.

If you're craving some artistic downtime, you'll find all the inspiration you need at the Glyptotek and the Design Museum. You'll love the Glyptotek for the free admission on Tuesdays and the impressive winter garden with the cutest little coffeeshop overlooking the lush vegetation. The typography obsessed will find all their dreams fulfilled by the extensive poster collections at the Design Museum. Also, there's like....chairs...lots of chairs...

I wish we had more time (and budget) to explore this amazing city. Hopefully we'll be back during sunnier days for more adventures and more tales to share on the blog. Till then I leave you with our vlog of the things we remembered to film -_-

Have a brilliant day!

Dora
